Stockport ‘Eyesore’ bridge finally removed

It’s become almost as recognisable a Stockport landmark as the famous old viaduct arches or the blue glass pyramid. But unlike its iconic Stopfordian cousins, residents and visitors won’t be sad to see the back of the Bridgefield Street traffic bridge.
The structure, described as an ‘eyesore’ has provided car park access up its steel ramps for some 36 years but was closed earlier this year and has now finally been removed as part of ongoing development in the area.
The Redrock project will see a cinema and leisure development being built on the site of the former Great Egerton Street car park which will include The Light Cinema, new restaurants including Pizza Express and Zizzi , and high quality landscaped areas.
A new 360 space multi storey car park is also being built as part of the scheme that will link to the Debenhams roof top giving visitors access to over 1,200 parking spaces.
