Stepping Hill Children’s A & E Closed After Pepper Spray Scare

The Children’s Accident and Emergency Section of Stepping Hill had to be closed for several hours after a substance which made 12 staff ill turned out to be pepper spray.
The substance, brought in by a patient to show medics after they started to suffer with an eye irritation, caused sore throats in staff and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service sent several crews to the hospital, including a hazardous materials team as a precaution.
The spray made then its way into the air conditioning system causing the staff illness.
A spokeswoman for Stepping Hill stressed that no members of staff came to any long-term harm and are now absolutely fine.
