‘From Station to Station’ will celebrate women connected by the Mid-Cheshire Line in a live performance on the 11.02am train from Chester to Manchester Piccadilly on Thursday 13th September, bringing Elizabeth Gaskell and Alison Uttley – and those who influenced them – to life along the line that connects them.
The performance will also celebrate Stockport’s amazing women – Dame Wendy Hiller DBE and Elizabeth Raffald.
All props created will be put onto the train at each station, so that by the time the train arrives at Manchester Piccadilly, the props form a composite background for the live performance at the station.
Sarah Flannery, chairman of Knutsford Promenades, said: “The National Heritage Open Days theme is ‘Extraordinary Women’ and, as we are also locally partnering with Mid-Cheshire Community Rail Partnership and their ‘Amazing Women by Rail’ project, From Station to Station celebrates women connected by the Mid-Cheshire Line. It focuses on Mrs Gaskell and Alison Uttley and weaves in other stories.
“It’s a brilliantly researched and written piece of community theatre with professional musicians and wonderful props that will do justice to the legacy of many amazing local women.”
Cllr Kate Butler, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said: “What a fantastic way to celebrate these inspirational women who, in their own times, challenged the traditional expectations of society. I’m delighted that Stockport’s hat-making heritage and two amazing women will also be part of this celebration and I hope people will take part by coming to the workshop and making the props for the live performance.”
