MEMBERS of a local golf club have raised £883 for the stroke unit at Stepping Hill Hospital.

The money was raised after current captain Barry McConnell at Houldsworth Golf Club nominated the hospital to receive money raised during his year of office.

The cash was donated by members as a result of the “captain’s drive in”.

Mr McConnell said: “The event generally entails the incoming captain driving a ball hopefully down the first fairway to signal the start of his year in office.

“My reasons for choosing Stepping Hill are twofold, in that my one of my daughters is a nurse there and tells me about the dedication and professionalism of everyone to both patients and to the families of patients. And secondly, a close friend and work colleague of mine suffered a stroke last year and sadly passed away there.”
