A WOMAN from Stockport who fraudulently obtained benefit totalling more than £30,000 and was jailed for six months.
Appearing at Minshull Street Crown Court, Michelle Marie Cassidy, 42, of Offerton Lane, was prosecuted for failing to declare that she was no longer resident in the UK and was in fact living in Spain thereby obtaining benefits fraudulently from Stockport Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.
The theft of public money was discovered by the Department for Work and Pensions and was jointly investigated by them and Stockport Council’s Counter Fraud Investigation Team
Cassidy who pleaded guilty to obtaining £30,874.51 in income support, housing benefit and council tax benefit was given a six month prison sentence.
The overpayments are to be repaid and are separate from the court action.
