In 2012 ‘The Friends of the Plaza’ published their first booklet ‘The Plaza’s Millennium Re-Birth… How did it all begin ?’, telling the incredible story, pre restoration, of how the team of enthusiastic  volunteers had saved the much loved Art-Deco Stockport Plaza from possible demolition, after it had closed as a bingo hall in 1998.
The Chairman of the Plaza’s supporting group Ian Hodgkiss has recently compiled and published the second book: ‘The PLAZA’S Millennium Re-Birth   Part. 2  The Work Continues’.
The fully illustrated book continues the story from the time when the Plaza closed from Saturday 7th February 2009 for ten months for the first phase of the £3.2m restoration, through to the Plaza’s re-opening with a Gala Performance on Friday 11th December 2009.
The publication illustrates in detail, the work painstakingly carried out to restore the building back into its original 1932 Art Deco glory, whilst at the same time ensuring all facilities meet with the requirements opresent day audiences.
Detailing the works carried out post the restoration, it gives an insight into the Plaza’s film and stage facilities, and lists various building awards bestowed on the project, the many works carried out in-house including, the alterations to the circle, restoration of the stage,   the re-seating of the auditorium, cleaning and restoration of the Compton organ and much more.
As the work continues, seventeen years into the project, Stockport Plaza Trust still has great plans and aspirations for the Plaza, and is a fitting tribute to all the volunteers past and present.
The book is available now from the Plaza Box Office – Price £4.
